The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) Course is designed to teach individuals the skills and knowledge necessary to provide effective range safety supervision at shooting events and activities. This course is appropriate for individuals who are interested in serving as a range safety officer or those who wish to enhance their knowledge of range safety principles and practices.

Throughout the course, students will learn about the role of the Range Safety Officer (RSO), range standard operating procedures, emergency procedures, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, and range rules. Students will also learn about the importance of effective communication with shooters and range staff, as well as the use of personal protective equipment.

In addition, the course will cover the principles of risk management, including the identification and assessment of potential hazards, and the implementation of controls to mitigate those hazards. Participants will also learn about the legal and ethical responsibilities of the Range Safety Officer (RSO), including liability issues and responding to emergencies.

The NRA RSO Course is taught by certified NRA instructors who have extensive experience in range safety and instruction. Students who successfully complete the course will receive an NRA certificate of completion, which is recognized by many shooting ranges and organizations as proof of range safety training.

Whether you are a new Range Safety Officer (RSO) or looking to enhance your range safety skills, the NRA RSO Course will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective range safety supervision and help ensure the safety of all participants at shooting events and activities.

Duration

Although the course can be completed as quickly as 9 hours, it often will take longer depending on the class size and the facilities at the range. For example, a large number of indoor and outdoor ranges of different types cannot be toured quickly.

Prerequisites

NRA Range Safety Officers should be experienced shooters, involved in many aspects of target shooting, training and range supervision. The NRA encourages active shooters to learn more and become responsible for the safety of fellow shooters through this program. There will be practical exercises with all types of firearms in this course, even if a shooter’s discipline does not require experience with those types.

Course Completion

Students will receive feedback on the practical exercises conducted during the course. There is a short written test on the lesson material at the end of the course. A 90% score is required to obtain certification.

For classes requiring time on the range, we like to tell clients coming to dress in layers. Bring slacks or pants with belt loops wide enough for a sturdy belt. A short sleeved shirt under a long sleeved shirt with a jacket that opens down the front.

Comfortable and sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Wearing layers enables you to take a layer off as the weather warms throughout the day. A hat with a brim that is comfortable with the hearing protection you will be wearing.

NOTE: If there is no range time required please dress comfortably as you will be in a classroom setting for the duration of the class.
