The NRA Basic Rifle Course is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly use a rifle for target shooting and hunting. This course is appropriate for individuals who have little to no experience with rifles or those who are looking to refresh their skills.
Throughout the course, students will learn about firearm safety rules, rifle parts and operation, ammunition, shooting fundamentals, cleaning and maintenance, and safe storage options. Students will also have the opportunity to practice basic shooting techniques and engage in live-fire exercises under the guidance of an experienced instructor.
In addition to hands-on training, the course will cover essential safety topics such as safe loading and unloading procedures, proper handling and storage of rifles, and recognizing and responding to malfunctions. Participants will also learn about the legal and ethical responsibilities of gun ownership, including laws regarding the use of lethal force in self-defense situations.
The NRA Basic Rifle Course is taught by certified NRA instructors who have extensive experience in rifle shooting and instruction. Students who successfully complete the course will receive an NRA certificate of completion, which is recognized by many states as proof of firearm safety training.

NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN CLASS!!
This class is eight to ten hours long. You can shoot any caliber rifle between .22LR and a .308 caliber but a .22LR or .223/556 caliber is recommended. You will shoot between 50 and 100 rounds in shooting exercises. Ammunition can be purchased at the range or you can bring factory loaded ammunition for your rifle. No steel core ammunition is permitted. Students working toward the NRA Rifle Instructor Certification must take this class.
Frequently Asked Questions
For classes requiring time on the range, we like to tell clients coming to dress in layers. Bring slacks or pants with belt loops wide enough for a sturdy belt. A short sleeved shirt under a long sleeved shirt with a jacket that opens down the front.
Comfortable and sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Wearing layers enables you to take a layer off as the weather warms throughout the day. A hat with a brim that is comfortable with the hearing protection you will be wearing.
NOTE: If there is no range time required please dress comfortably as you will be in a classroom setting for the duration of the class.
Most people find that trying to leave at lunchtime is impractical. It is recommended to bring a lunch with you.
